CCPR and Soil Stabilization

Getting the Most Bang for Your Buck!

By far the most significant cost savings an agency and owner can realize when they have to reconstruct their asphalt streets and parking lots is to make use of all of the existing, already paid for materials/assets they have on site. Instead of paying much more to haul all of those materials away, and then haul in brand new materials, the cost savings of strengthening and recycling those existing materials with a modern, proven, sustainably engineered approach, that does not compromise structural integrity, is usually 45% or more.

Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) and Stabilization Processes Combined

Project sizes of 180,000 SF or greater in size that require complete reconstruction of the entire pavement section can be done with the combination of the CCPR and stabilization processes. There is ample evidence by many municipal and private agencies as to the cost effectiveness of utilizing these dual processes, not to mention the significant environmental benefits.

The first step is to grind out and stockpile the existing asphalt section for later reuse as a recycled base course pavement section. Once the asphalt is removed and stockpiled nearby, the remaining aggregate base and/or subgrade soils are stabilized/strengthened in-place to provide a firm and unyielding base section on which to pave the recycled asphalt. Similar to FDR and soil stabilization, the now stabilized materials will have better structural values than a Class II aggregate base and have a better ability to support and disburse loads. Once the stabilized base section is completed, the CCPR process will take the stockpiled asphalt grindings, crush them, and mix them with an engineered emulsion to produce a recycled asphalt that will be paved as the base course asphalt section. Subsequently this recycled asphalt will be capped with a thinner final wearing course of conventional asphalt.

Benefits of CCPR and Cement Stabilization:

  • Typical overall project cost savings of 45% or more.
  • Shortened construction schedules by up to one-half the time.
  • Reduction in trucking by a 40:1 ratio.
  • Minimized disruptions and better ingress and egress for traffic, residents and businesses.
  • Better structural section that contributes to a lengthened life cycle and lower life cycle costs.
  • Less impact on utilities because of minimized excavation depths.
  • Carbon footprint reduction of 48% or more.
  • Conservation of non-renewable aggregate and oil resources.

On suitable projects, in-place recycling is the preferred choice to the more costly, time consuming, and environmentally detrimental remove and replace (R&R) construction method. Contact us for a project evaluation to see if the CCPR process is suitable for your project.
